Focus on Preeclampsia: A nephrologist’s point of view

Dr. Amelia R. Bernasconi

Medicine Department, Hospital J. A. Fernandez

Abstract

Preeclampsia is an entity almost exclusive to human pregnancy (although it has also been described in gorillas), potentially affecting multiple systems such as, the central nervous system, heart, coagulation system, liver and maternal kidneys. Preeclampsia, Toxemia, PIH, PET refer to serious, closely related hypertensive condition of pregnancy. Toxemia is an older term based on a belief that the condition was the result of toxins in the blood. PIH, a newer term, stands for Pregnancy Induced Hypertension. It occurs 2 to 7 % of pregnancies, making it perhaps the most common glomerular disease in the world.
