Abstract

Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of death in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Extraosseous calcifications, particularly vascular calcifications (VC), are frequently observed in patients with CKD and represent an important risk factor for cardiovascular death (1,2). Changes in mineral metabolism, which are related to the development of secondary hyperaparathyroidism, play an important role in the pathogenesis of VC. Uremic patients may develop both calcifications of the intima (atherosclerosis) and calcifications of the media (arteriosclerosis), although the latter seem to be more prevalent (3).
