Daily Hemodialysis – Update 2007

Dr Andreas Pierratos

Humber River Regional Hospital - University of Toronto

Abstract

The failure of a higher dialysis dose to improve patient survival in the HEMO and ADEMEX studies, using conventional thrice weekly hemodialysis or CAPD respectively, increased the interest in alternative dialysis schedules. The three main contenders include long (usually 8-hour) hemodialysis, which is performed thrice weekly or every other day or night, and the daily regimens which include short daily or nocturnal hemodialysis. Hemo(dia)filtration has also been attracting increased interest especially in Europe . This review will concentrate on the daily hemodialysis regimens.
